I Say...

I say… what the heck happened to good old journalism?

The idea that journalism had the power to make a difference. By bringing awareness and facilitating a forum where ideas can be exchanged freely. Where issues could be discussed from myriad points of view and where like minded people could arrive at probable solutions to issues that were eating away at the very core of our existence. Redundant ideologies that were holding us back from taking that decisive step toward freedom. Towards emancipation in the truest sense of the word.

“Where the mind is without fear, and the head is held high…” What happened to that dream? And to us? We were supposed to be the instruments of change. Of progress. Of a better world. Where fear didn’t reside within every heart. Where did this fear come from anyway? How come each and every one of us has the same fears?

What happened to the world that cared? That bothered to hold doors open for strangers laden with packages, that vacated the seat for older people, that offered help – water, a hand, a shoulder. Where in the past couple of decades did that world disappear? When was it that we became people who cared about nothing more than our immediate surroundings. I me myself. Survival of the fittest. Never mind what happened to the weak, the meek and the helpless.

I once read this somewhere - “We’re all broken in greater or lesser degree. The way I see it, the less broken have to look out for the more broken”. I’m sorry. Did I miss something? Coz that’s the world I remember belonging to. Or did I do a Rip Van Winkle on the world?
